Based in Savona, Italy, the four-piece have conjured ghosts of \u201870s heavy and masterful \u201890s riffmongering to offer a brew both potent and thoroughly modern. Cosmic Blues is their third album behind 2014\u2019s Bifolchi Inside and 2012\u2019s Spaghetti Cowboys (get it?) and marks their debut on Small Stone Records.<br><br>Comprised of lead vocalist\/lead guitarist Alessio Caravelli, rhythm guitarist Massimiliano Giacosa, bassist Marcello Destefanis and drummer Simone Brunzu, Black Elephant make their mark in their home country\u2019s booming heavy rock underground with memorable songs and a sound that\u2019s just as comfortable getting funky on \u201cChase Me\u201d as it is reimagining Soundgarden as a riff rock outfit \u00e0 la peak-era Dozer, rolling out huge grooves en route to \u201cCosmic Blues for Solitary Moose,\u201d loaded with fuzz and scorching solos. <br><br>Given a brisk, live sound in its production \u2013 fitting for a group with hundreds of shows under their collective belt \u2013 Cosmic Blues comes across natural and at times maintains the intensity of Black Elephants\u2019 earlier work (closer \u201cInno\u201d walks by and waves), while simultaneously exploring more spacious realms in the not-a-cover \u201cHelter Skelter\u201d and the takeoff jammer \u201cBaby Eroina,\u201d which eases into and out of its nodding rhythm with a smoothness worthy of a group\u2019s third album and a fluidity that typifies the record\u2019s entire 34-minute run.<br><br>Leaving their own tracks in the footsteps of bands like Small Stone\u2019s own Isaak, Black Elephant hit a new level of craft with Cosmic Blues, and if the righteous drive of opener \u201cCosmic Soul,\u201d the flowing progression of the LP that ensues, and the name they\u2019ve given the whole affair are anything to go by, they know it for sure.
