Friday night, Denison Witmer played a house show at our art center — about a hundred people packed into a room in Grandview, Missouri. It was the first time we'd ever met in person. His music has been in my life for twenty years. That contradiction sent me digging into the psychology and sociology of something I've believed for a long time: art is a bookmark in our stories, the artists we love become part of our lives, and the things we make land in other people's lives whether we ever see it or not. Your art doesn't need an audience of millions. It just needs to reach one person.
